Learning Objective 3:

In this section I explain what my annotating and informal responding approaches are and how I decided what to mark and discuss.

Framing Statement:

I have many approaches to active critical thinking. One of them is as Susan Gilroy states to “take the information apart, look at its parts, and then try to put it back together again in a language that is meaningful to you.” Most of my annotations on the assigned articles are mainly me explaining to myself what this sentence is stating. I read these articles a sentence at a time and if I don’t understand I will stop and think about it and write next to it what I believe it is stating. Depending on who wrote the text varies on the amount of these annotations. If the article is written by someone who tends to go into great depth in the subject, I will usually need to write more summary annotations of specific sentences or paragraphs. If the article is written by someone who doesn’t go into as much depth, I will usually use other annotations to help me understand the text.

Another approach that I use to actively critically think about a passage is to circle or underline words that don’t make sense or never heard of. I then write next to it a definition that I search on google. That way I can understand what the text is meaning. If the word is brought up again, I can use my new knowledge of the word to apply it to the rest of the sentence and make meaning out of it.

Lastly, I write down questions and later try to answer them once I finish the passage to see if I knew the answer with having the knowledge of the entire article that I didn’t have previously.

BLOG 13:

I feel that a lot of people feel impeded by their life story depending on what they grew up on and what experiences they had as a child. If you were raised to be smart, to always do your homework and do chores, you would feel impeded to do the same as you grew up. For me personally, one of the things that I was always told to do was to be kind to other people. Naturally I grew up learning to be kind. As Schechtman says, “by developing and operating with a (mostly implicit) autobiographical narrative which acts as the lens through which we experience the world.” This is stating that most of us experience the world relying on our past stories.

Galen explains that he experiences life in the present. He does try and make memories in order to tell them or write stories about them he just lives these moments as they come. He doesn’t forcefully enjoy moments, he does it just because. He uses a quote from Fernando Pessoa stating, “Each moment I feel as I’ve just been born/ into an endlessly new world” I feel that this is a great way to live, and that more people should experience live as if it is the only day in their life.
